Research Contract Biomass Unit - CIRI - Interdepartmental Centre for Industrial Research in Energy and Environment - Ravenna

RES obtained a research contract to support activities scheduled for 2011 by the new Biomass Unit of CIRI Energy and Environment, Ravenna Technopole.

The research contract, part of the "Energia, parte Biomasse" project, included the following work lines:

  • Development of a prototype pyrolyser for coupling with anaerobic digestion
  • Selection of inocula for anaerobic digestion (AD) of recalcitrant biomass, including algal and pyrolysis-derived biomasses
  • Selection and collection of biomasses allocated for pyrolysis/AD experimentation

In particular, RES was involved in the following activities:

  • Checking types of residual biomasses suitable for pyrolysis-AD integration, their availability and supply costs
  • Fine-tuning of pyrolytic reactors for biomass transformation
  • Sampling of pyrolytic biomass fractions
  • Launching of selection lines for inocula destined for the degradation of biomass and pyrolytic fractions
  • Algal biomass collection tests on small scale and assessment of anaerobic degradability
  • Preliminary project of pyrolyser prototype to be coupled with laboratory AD
